Banks offering share dealing in Europe
Retail, private and cantonal banks across Europe that offer securities accounts and online share dealing, with their supervisors and what a banking licence means for your protection.
Many Europeans invest through their own bank. Banks are usually more expensive than online brokers, but they come with a banking licence, deposit guarantees for cash, and often national tax reporting.
This list covers the main retail banks with securities accounts in each country, from Germany's Sparkassen and cooperative banks to Switzerland's cantonal banks, the Nordic banks, and the large banking groups of Central and Eastern Europe. They are listed to complete the picture of where people in each country can invest; entries are short register listings unless we have reviewed the bank.
A banking licence and your protection
- Cash in your account is usually a deposit covered by the national deposit guarantee – €100,000 per person per bank in the EU.
- Securities are held in custody and must be kept separate from the bank's own assets.
- Large euro-area banks are supervised directly by the ECB as well as national authorities.
