CySEC Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission
Licenses more retail FX/CFD brokers than any other EU regulator. A CySEC Cyprus Investment Firm (CIF) can passport its services across the EEA.
Why CySEC matters so much
The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission licenses Cyprus Investment Firms (CIFs), and more EU retail forex and CFD brokers are licensed in Cyprus than anywhere else. Because a CIF licence can be passported across the EEA, a CySEC decision can affect traders from Portugal to Finland.
What CySEC supervises
- Investment firms (CIFs), including most EU-licensed CFD brokers.
- Fund managers, the Cyprus Stock Exchange, and crypto-asset service providers under MiCA.
- The Investor Compensation Fund (ICF) for CIF clients, which pays 90% of the covered claim up to €20,000.
How to check a CIF
CySEC's list of Cypriot investment firms shows each firm's licence number, status, the services it may provide, and the websites it is authorised to use. The website list is the fastest way to spot a clone: if the site you are on is not listed, stop.
CySEC also publishes warnings about unauthorised firms and announcements of fines and settlements. Reading a broker's enforcement history takes a few minutes and is revealing.
Reputation
CySEC's reputation has improved considerably since the early 2010s, when Cyprus was associated with aggressive binary-options marketing. It has since fined and suspended many firms, strengthened its ICF rules and supervision, and applies the full ESMA retail package. As with any regulator, the licence is a minimum standard, not a guarantee of quality – compare firms on their own record.
