Trading in Europe, country by country

EU rules harmonise a lot, but not everything. Compensation limits, complaint bodies, tax and some local rules still depend on where you live and where your broker is licensed.

The EU rulebook for investment firms (MiFID II) and ESMA's CFD restrictions apply in every EU and EEA country, so a retail client in Lisbon and one in Helsinki get the same leverage limits and negative balance protection from an EU-licensed CFD broker. What still differs from country to country:

  • Compensation limits – from the EU minimum of €20,000 up to €100,000 in Spain and Hungary. The scheme is decided by the country where your broker is licensed.
  • Out-of-court complaint bodies and how they work.
  • Tax on trading gains and the tax-advantaged accounts available.
  • Local rules – advertising bans, extra warnings, and which domestic brokers give you local tax reporting.

Investor compensation at a glance

Cover if an investment firm fails and cannot return your money or securities. It depends on the country of the firm's licence, not your country of residence.
