Comparing a "zero commission" account with a raw-spread account
Brokers price in two ways. A standard account builds the cost into a wider spread, for example 1.0 pip on EUR/USD with no commission. A raw or ECN-style account shows spreads close to the interbank price, for example 0.1–0.3 pips, and charges a commission per lot. Put both into the calculator and compare the cost in pips: a 7-dollar round-turn commission on one lot of EUR/USD is equivalent to 0.7 pips.
Where to find the real numbers
- Spreads: brokers publish average (not minimum) spreads on their contract specification pages. Averages matter; minimum spreads are marketing.
- Commission: often quoted per side ("3.50 per lot per side" = 7 round turn).
- Financing: shown in the platform's symbol specification as swap long / swap short.
- Costs and charges disclosure: MiFID II requires EU brokers to disclose costs before you trade and send an annual statement of all costs and charges in money terms. Read it: it is the most honest number you will get.
Small differences compound. At 40 one-lot trades a month, 0.3 pips of extra cost on EUR/USD is roughly 1,440 US dollars a year. Use the compounding & fees calculator to see what costs do over several years.
