How brokers charge for holding CFDs overnight

A leveraged CFD position is financed by the broker. For index, share and commodity CFDs most European brokers charge a benchmark interest rate plus a mark-up on longs, and pay (or charge) the benchmark minus a mark-up on shorts. The daily figure is:

    daily financing = position value × (benchmark ± mark-up) ÷ 365

Mark-ups of 2–3% a year above the benchmark are common for retail CFDs. On a position worth €20,000 at 4.5% a year, that is about €2.47 a night, or roughly €900 a year – on top of the spread. Holding a leveraged position for months is therefore expensive compared with owning the asset.

    Forex swaps are different

Currency pairs use "tom-next" swap points derived from the interest-rate difference between the two currencies, plus the broker's mark-up. Your platform shows them as swap long and swap short in points or money per lot. Enter that per-lot figure in the trading cost calculator instead.

    Triple swap day

Spot FX settles two business days after the trade, so positions held over Wednesday's cut-off are usually charged three nights to cover the weekend. Index and share CFDs often charge weekends on Friday instead. Check your broker's rules.

Brokers that serve clients who cannot pay or receive interest may offer swap-free accounts with an administration fee instead; the fee often ends up similar. See trading costs explained.
