How Fibonacci retracements work
After a strong move, prices often pull back part of the way before continuing. Fibonacci retracement levels divide the move at ratios derived from the Fibonacci sequence: 23.6%, 38.2%, 50% (not a Fibonacci ratio, but widely used), 61.8% and 78.6%. In an up-swing the retracement is measured down from the high: level = high − (high − low) × ratio.
Extensions (127.2%, 161.8%, 261.8%) project how far a move might travel beyond its previous extreme, and are often used for profit targets.
Choosing the swing
The levels are only as good as the swing you choose. Use clear turning points on the timeframe you trade, not the most convenient candle. Different traders pick different points, which is one reason these levels act as zones rather than exact prices.
Treat Fibonacci levels as a planning tool alongside supply and demand zones and pivot points, never as a signal on their own.
