What the ECB reference rate is – and isn't
The European Central Bank publishes euro reference rates for around 30 currencies every working day at about 16:00 Central European Time, based on a daily concertation between central banks. They are widely used in contracts, accounting and statistics. Cross rates between two non-euro currencies (for example GBP/PLN) are derived through the euro.
Reference rates are not dealing prices. Banks, card schemes and brokers add their own spread. When your broker converts a USD profit into your EUR account, compare its rate with the reference rate to see what the conversion costs you.
