President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva asserted on Wednesday that Brazil is prepared to sign the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. Despite France's opposition, Lula emphasized that the European Union does not require France’s vote to finalize the deal. “We haven’t gone back; we’ve never progressed as much as we are now. The difficulties we faced have been resolved, and today we are ready to sign. The problem is that France is raising issues with its local products. But my reassurance is that the European Union doesn’t need France’s vote to make the agreement,” he stated.
Collaboration with Spain and Necessity of the Agreement
During a discussion with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who was visiting Brazil, Lula underscored the necessity of the agreement for both blocs. He expressed regret for not signing the agreement earlier but remained optimistic about its future. “The European Union and Mercosur need this agreement; it’s no longer a matter of liking or not. We need to send a signal to the world that we want to move forward,” he added.Contrasting Views with France
Lula's stance is in contrast to French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent call to end negotiations with Mercosur, deeming it “impossible” to conclude the agreement. However, Lula highlighted Brazil’s favorable conditions for Spanish entrepreneurs, emphasizing the country’s purchasing power and stability. He assured that investments in Brazil would be profitable and beneficial for investors.Economic Stability and Investment Opportunities
Lula pointed out Brazil’s strong international standing, including its status as a creditor to the IMF and substantial international reserves. He mentioned recent interest from major financial institutions in investing in Brazil, humorously noting, “I won’t even comment on the figures to avoid causing jealousy to my colleague Pedro Sánchez,” which elicited laughter from the Spanish businessmen present. This market commentary reflects conditions on the publication date above and is not updated afterwards.
