What Is an ECN Broker?

ECN is short for Electronic Communication Network. An ECN broker is a broker that uses this technology to connect traders directly to banks, investment corporations, hedge funds, and whatnot. More specifically, the ECN broker does not execute trades for investors. Rather, they simply pass on your trades to the liquidity providers using this direct network and do not intervene in any way.

Regular brokers, or dealing desk brokers, execute trades themselves instead of routing them to the interbank market. This gives the broker a chance to make a requote or cause delays that will change the value of your trade and even result in higher fees. Also, unlike dealing desk brokers who customarily take a position opposite that of the trader, ECN brokers are not allowed to do so, as this is essentially trading against the client and will bring about a conflict of interest.

What Are the Benefits of Using ECN Brokers?

By choosing from the best ECN brokers offering their services today, traders can enjoy an abundance of benefits that they cannot get from regular forex brokers. Following are some of the most significant ones.

Tighter Spreads

In forex trading, the spread refers to the difference between the buying price and the selling price of a currency pair. A wide spread means less profits for the trader, while a tight spread allows traders to earn more. Therefore, forex traders are constantly on the lookout for tight spreads. ECN brokers are known for offering very tight spreads on most currency pairs, usually starting at 0.0 pips.

Rapid Trade Execution

Because ECN brokers provide a direct connection between the trader and the banks, there is very little risk of delays, if any. In fact, trade execution is typically instantaneous, and there is absolutely no chance of a requote. Because of this, forex traders are able to close and open trades at exactly the price that they wish.

Longer Trading Hours

Although not applicable to all, many of the best ECN brokers enable investors to trade beyond the regular trading hours. This is a valuable advantage during those times when significant price fluctuations occur when regular trading is already closed.

Fixed Commission per Trade

ECN brokers charge a fixed commission per trade that they execute. While this does sound like a drawback in comparison to the zero commission charged by market makers, it’s actually a good thing. With market makers, spreads are fixed and quite high, and this is how they earn from traders. ECN brokers, on the other hand, have very tight spreads and so they have to make money from commissions, which are not even that high if you look at the big picture.
